The Cheon research group has focused on the development of new catalytic reactions and methods for organic synthesis. Ultimately, we are interested in applying these methods to synthesis of complex molecules possessing interesting structural, biological, and physical properties. Particularly, we are working on the the development of novel methods to access 2,3-disubstituted indole-3-acetic acid derivatives and application of the resulting indole derivatives to the divergent total synthesis of naturally occurring indole natural products. Furthermore, we have developed a building block strategy for the synthesis of biologically active natural products and completed the modular total synthesis of phenanthroindolizidines and phenanthroquinolizidines. As such, the research in our group spans the areas of catalysis including asymmetric catalysis and organic synthesis.
