Magnetic Material Science Laboratory
Our Laboratory does research on devising new device and materials based on magnetic/spintronic nanotechnology. This core technology is applicable to accomplish extremely high density data storage, nonvolatile magnetic random access memory(MRAM). Specially, our interests are focused on developing spin transfer torque MRAM(STT-MRAM). We used amorphous materials for a free layer in magnetic tunnel junctions(MTJs) to lower the switching field. Using materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy(PMA) as pinned/free layer is another way to make a high density MRAM. We're conducting research collaborations with industry and research labs worldwide.
Bulk Metallic Glass Laboratory
?
Our laboratory does research on non-equilibrium and metastable materials. During the past decade, many unusual metallic alloys have been developed. These alloys fail to crystallize during solidification at low cooling rates, thus forming "bulk" glasses. Research on the liquid alloys includes fundamental studies of atomic diffusion, crystallization kinetics, liquid/liquid phase separation, and the glass transition. Research on the solid "glassy" materials includes studies of magnetic properties, elastic properties, and mechanisms of deformation, flow, and fracture. The group has developed composite materials which employ a metallic glass matrix to achieve unusual combination of properties for structural engineering applications.
