The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) is the national institute for research into metalliferous and mineral raw materials. It was founded in 2011 in the context of the German Resource Strategy with the objective to provide solutions for a sustainable use of raw materials.
HIF is part of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), collaborates closely with TU Bergakademie Freiberg and is a member of the EIT RawMaterials community. It has more than 140 staff members from more than 25 countries. It is funded by the German Federal Government (90 percent) and the Free State of Saxony (10 percent).
HIF researchers deal with the opportunities and limits of the Circular Economy, aiming to develop both resource- and energy efficient technologies along the metalliferous raw material cycle. This includes innovative processes for exploration, processing, metallurgy and recycling. In order to develop these technologies, scientists integrate interdisciplinary approaches from modelling and valuation of recovery processes, from system integrated metal production and from resource analytics. Seen from a materials’ point of view, HIF focuses on high-technology metals like indium, gallium, germanium and rare earth elements as well as complex materials from both primary and secondary sources.
