NIH Director`s Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series

    Annual DeWitt Stetten Jr. Lecture

Dr. Amaro???s scientific interests lie at the intersection of computer-aided drug discovery and biophysical simulation methods. She has a long-standing interest in incorporating structural and dynamical information derived from all-atom molecular dynamics simulations in drug discovery programs, and has worked in a variety of disease areas, including infectious diseases and cancer. Her lab???s work on p53 revealed a novel druggable pocket that clarified the mechanism of action for a compound in clinical trials. This work served as the basis for the formation of a start-up company related to the development of p53 reactivation drugs, Actavalon, Inc. Dr. Amaro is a co-founder, on the scientific advisory board, and an equity shareholder in Actavalon, Inc. Her scientific vision revolves around the continued development of molecular dynamics simulations in drug discovery programs, particularly in expanding the range and complexity of molecular constituents represented in such simulations, and novel multiscale methods for elucidating their time dependent dynamics. She is the director of the NIH P41 National Biomedical Computation Resource and a co-director of the NIH U01 Drug Design Data Resource.

About the Annual DeWitt Stetten Jr. Lecture: Established by NIGMS in 1982 and presented annually in honor of Dr. Stetten, the third NIGMS director, this annual lecture is part of the Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series.

Recent advances in understanding cancer biology are beginning to be translated into improvements in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the post-genome era, we increasingly rely on strong collaboration between basic and clinical scientists to develop novel approaches for treatment of human disease. The NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is one of the largest cancer research organizations in the world, with more than 200 principal investigators, and has played a major role in developing and implementing many new technologies, such as nanotechnology, next generation sequencing, genomics and proteomics.

    • - Category : Conferences
The HIV Dynamics and Replication Program is hosting this half-day conference to showcase the latest findings in the broad field of innate immunity. The presentations will highlight recent advances in understanding cell-intrinsic immune strategies by which hosts counteract viral and bacterial infections and the mechanisms by which pathogens circumvent or overcome these immune barriers. Specific areas of focus will include immune sensing, mutational escape, paleovirology, interferon-induced effector specificity, inflammasomes, and evolutionary conflicts between pathogens and host restriction factors. An in-depth discussion of recent progress in our understanding host-pathogen interactions within infected cells should lead to new insights into the roles that cellular factors play in preventing infections in uninfected cells, which will aid in the international public health efforts.

Invited speakers in the outstanding program include: Paul Bieniasz, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Laboratory of Retrovirology, The Rockefeller University; Alex Compton, HIV Dynamics and Replication Program, National Cancer Institute; Carolyn Coyne, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; David Knipe, Harvard Medical School; Harmit Malik, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Division of Basic Sciences, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; and Nan Yan, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

    NCCIH Integrative Medicine Research Lecture

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) presents the Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series. The series provides overviews of the current state of research and practice involving complementary health approaches and explores perspectives on the emerging discipline of integrative medicine.

Alan I. Leshner Ph.D., is Chief Executive Officer, Emeritus, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and former Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals. Dr. Leshner will address how the public understanding of science benefits both the public and the scientific enterprise. However, communicating science to the public is not a simple task and is an acquired, not innate skill. It is particularly difficult and complex in domains like complimentary and integrative health. Fortunately, there is a growing body of scientific evidence about what works and does not that can be used to increase the effectiveness of science communication efforts. Dr. Leshner will speak both about the needs for engaging with the public about science and some of the lessons learned, especially in controversial or contentious areas.

NIH Director`s Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series

Dr. Manly aims to improve the diagnostic accuracy of neuropsychological tests when used to detect cognitive impairment and Alzheimer`s disease among African American and Hispanic elders. This work clarifies the independent influences of language, acculturation, educational experiences, racial socialization, and socioeconomic status on cognitive test performance, with the ultimate goal of understanding more about the relationship between culture and cognition. Recent work focuses on the specificity of cognitive tasks in detecting subtle cognitive decline among illiterate and low-literacy elders. This work has important implications for determining the complex influence of reading and writing skills on brain function.
