The TAC is advisory to the NIH, and provides a forum for meetings between elected Tribal officials(or their designated representatives) and NIH officials to exchange views, share information, and seek advice concerning intergovernmental responsibilities related to the implementation and administration of NIH programs. It was established to help ensure that Tribes and AI/AN people have meaningful and timely input in the development of NIH policies, programs, and priorities. The NIH TAC seeks to ensure that NIH policies or activities that affect AI/AN communities are brought to the attention of Tribal leaders.

The mission of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) includes the support of basic, clinical and translational research as well as the support of research training and the development of research careers. To help achieve the goals of the NIDCR, the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council (NADCRC) has the responsibility of advising, consulting with and making recommendations to the Secretary, DHHS, and the Director, NIDCR, on matters relating to the directions of research, research support, training and career development supported by the Institute. Included in this responsibility is the conduct of the secondary review of research grant applications with a focus on NIDCR scientific program priorities and program balance as well as the conduct of research by the Division of Intramural Research, NIDCR.

    NIH Neuroscience Series Seminar

His lab studies the neural ensemble dynamics of sensori-motor processes in awake rodents, combining behavior, multi-neuronal electrophysiology, complex analysis and modeling, pharmacology and optogenetics to probe ongoing spiking activity in real-time. The goal is to eventually move our understanding of this activity forward to the point at which it can be understood online, in single trials, and without reference to external benchmarks (stimulus onset time, for instance) that the animal doesn???t actually know.

The cornerstone of his lab work involves examination of the neural responses to gustatory (taste) stimuli, which are unique in their reliable non-arbitrariness: a gustatory stimulus hits the tongue laden with meaning???each causes an emotional response (yum or yuck), and each causes a behavior (consumption or rejection); much of our research plumbs these processes.

Furthermore, the potency of taste stimuli is such that rats quickly learn about their properties???whether they poison or nourish???and readily learn ABOUT visual and auditory stimuli that are PAIRED with them. They study these processes as well???a pursuit which has led them into some experiments that don???t involve taste at all.

The Cancer Moonshot was launched in 2016 with the stated goal of achieving in five years what would otherwise take a decade of cancer research. To identify those areas of cancer research that were poised for acceleration, a Blue Ribbon Panel was convened with representatives from across the cancer continuum. The panel developed a series of recommendations designed to accelerate our understanding of cancer. This session will review those recommendations, describe the extramural programs that are being established, and highlight three of the intramural programs that are being launched as part of the Cancer Moonshot.

The BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies) was launched in 2013 as a collaborative, public-private research partnership with the goal of facilitating the development and application of innovative technologies to understand brain function. Inspired by the Human Genome Project and born out of a Grand Challenge, the BRAIN Initiative seeks to revolutionize our understanding of the human brain. This session will provide an overview of neuroscience and neurotechnology research directions being pursued within the NIH Intramural Research Program as well as offer a panel discussion that will cover past activities and future directions of this innovative new program.

As our understanding of innate immune mechanisms and their relationship to adaptive immunity has become clearer, we have grown to appreciate how inflammation lies at the heart of nearly all diseases. We now see that, on many levels, all cells are ???immune??? cells and that inflammation and metabolism are intrinsically linked, a revolutionary concept that is opening new pathways to cures. This session explores the broad impact of inflammatory mechanisms on a broad range of disorders and their treatment.

Recent advances in understanding cancer biology are beginning to be translated into improvements in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the post-genome era, we increasingly rely on strong collaboration between basic and clinical scientists to develop novel approaches for treatment of human disease. The NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is one of the largest cancer research organizations in the world, with more than 200 principal investigators, and has played a major role in developing and implementing many new technologies, such as nanotechnology, next generation sequencing, genomics and proteomics.
