    • - National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, NIH (2017/09/12)
    • - Category : Conferences
    The NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will launch a new, centralized online resource portal that will enable patient groups to make progress along the entire translational science spectrum, no matter where they might be in that process.

    The NCATS Toolkit for Patient-Focused Therapy Development: Demonstration and Dissemination Meeting will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The event will enable the rare diseases and other patient communities to learn more about the toolkit, including how it can streamline their therapeutic development activities. Participants also will have the opportunity to provide input into how the toolkit can be refined, expanded and made even more useful.

    Developed in collaboration with patients and rare disease advocates, the toolkit is a centralized online portal for resources and tools that will cover the broad therapy development landscape, including:

    *How to establish a patient registry;
    *How to drive patient-focused discovery and pre-clinical research and development;
    *How to work with NIH and the Food and Drug Administration; and
    *How to conduct post-market surveillance.

    Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies

    Stress levels are on the rise in our increasingly busy world. In a 2015 national survey, 24 percent of U.S. adults reported extreme stress, an increase from 18 percent just one year earlier. About one-third reported their stress had increased over the past year; fewer than half as many said it had decreased. The top sources of stress were money, work, and family responsibilities. In this year???s Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary Therapies, to be held on September 7, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy will share his perspectives on stress in America. In a conversation with National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Francis Collins, he will explore the individual- and population-level impact of stress and steps we can take to reduce its effect on our health and our lives. In 2016, Dr. Murthy issued the first-ever Surgeon General???s report on substance abuse, Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General???s Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health, which drew attention to alcohol and drug misuse as a major public health challenge for our country. Stress is a known risk factor for substance misuse and for relapse in people who are struggling with addiction. Stress also contributes to a variety of other mental and physical health problems???such as headaches, anxiety, obesity, and heart disease. Stress can worsen health conditions both because of the strain it puts on the body and because people may respond to stress with undesirable behaviors, such as unhealthy eating. Stress may even play a role in pain, perhaps in part because of the overlapping pathways in the brain that interpret emotional and physical pain. Dr. Murthy and Dr. Collins will discuss what research is revealing about not only the ways in which stress affects us, but also the approaches people can incorporate into their lives to help reduce stress, such as regular exercise, social connection, and contemplative practices, including meditation. They will also examine how improvements in mental and emotional well-being can have a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities and explore how models of successful interventions might be scaled to reach larger communities.

    Join us on to find out more about stress and its impact on America???s health. The lecture will also be broadcast live via NIH Videocast and streamed live on Facebook at www.facebook.com/nih.gov and www.facebook.com/nih.nccih. We???ll use #ChatStress and #Straus17 on Twitter. This lecture is made possible with support from the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. To learn more, visit: nccih.nih.gov/news/events/lectures/SES17.

    Recent advances in understanding cancer biology are beginning to be translated into improvements in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the post-genome era, we increasingly rely on strong collaboration between basic and clinical scientists to develop novel approaches for treatment of human disease. The NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is one of the largest cancer research organizations in the world, with more than 200 principal investigators, and has played a major role in developing and implementing many new technologies, such as nanotechnology, next generation sequencing, genomics and proteomics.

    Elijah Saunders & Levi Watkins Memorial Lecture

    The Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science (CTRIS), a part of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), fosters and supports an integrated portfolio of late-stage T4 translation research, implementation science, and related research training in heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) disorders. CTRIS serves as a strategic focal point at NHLBI to identify optimal research strategies for the delivery of evidence-based interventions which, when scaled up, will improve population level health for all and reduce related health inequities. An important part of the CTRIS mission is the commitment to research training, mentoring, and career development, especially for early-stage investigators.

    Health inequities research is crucial for making progress in eliminating preventable differences in outcomes in non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, lung diseases, blood disorders, stroke, mental health, and diabetes. These inequities cause significant preventable morbidity and mortality in racial, ethnic, rural, and low-income populations across the United States. Evidence-based interventions and approaches that can eliminate disparities, as well as sustainable implementation and scale-up of proven-effective interventions, have the potential to close marked gaps in health outcomes in the United States. Thus, advancing health inequities research along with increasing the pool and expertise of researchers engaged in evidence-based scientific research efforts is critical. NHLBI/CTRIS will host a two-day workshop with thought-leaders and experts in the fields of implementation science, prevention science, health inequities research, and training and research workforce development. NHLBI/CTRIS will partner with several NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (i.e., NIH Office of Disease Prevention, NIMH, NICHD, NIDDK, NIMHD, NIA, NIDA), and the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health to execute this workshop. The workshop will discuss the Critical Challenges and Compelling Questions from the NHBLI Strategic Vision, as well as the HHS Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.

    The 2017 NIH-wide microbiome workshop will strive to cover advances that reveal the specific ways in which the microbiota influences the physiology of the host, both in a healthy and in a diseased state and how the microbiota may be manipulated, either at the community, population, organismal or molecular level, to maintain and/or improve the health of the host. The goal will be to seek input from a trans-disciplinary group of scientists to identify 1) knowledge gaps, 2) technical hurdles, 3) new approaches and 4) research opportunities that will inform the development of novel prevention and treatment strategies based on host/microbiome interactions over the next ten years.

    Dr. Gordon has harnessed the power of specialized mouse models to study the microbial communities that colonize the human gut. Over the past 20 years, this work has revolutionized our understanding of human biology, implicating the gut???s microbial residents in orchestrating healthy growth and development when these communities work well, and in causing disease when they do not.
