  • NIH VideoCast - How not to fool yourself with p-values and other statistic
    • - Dr. Regina Nuzzo (2017/08/23)
    • - Category : Special
In 2016 the American Statistical Association published its first position paper on the use of p-values, and recently this year a group of statisticians and other researchers published a paper recommending a change to the traditional definition of statistical significance. This talk will discuss some of the p-values problems and solutions raised in these and other papers, illustrating the ideas through a series of examples of published studies. The need for more attention to the communication and "human factors" of statistics and data science will also be briefly discussed. Dr. Regina Nuzzo received her Ph.D. in statistics from Stanford University, post-doctoral training in the Music Cognition Lab at McGill University, and graduate science writing training at University of California, Santa Cruz. She is a professor at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, and her writings about data, probability, and statistics have been published in Nature, New Scientist, Scientific American, and the New York Times, among others. Her Nature feature article about the P-value won the American Statistical Association???s 2014 Excellence in Statistical Reporting Award, and in 2015 she facilitated the ASA working group conference that produced the p-values consensus statement. Dina Paltoo, Ph.D., M.P.H., Office of Science Policy, NIH

Dr. Paltoo will highlight the origins of HeLa cells, which derived from the tumor of the late Henrietta Lacks and have been used extensively in biomedical research for the past 60 years. Dr. Paltoo will discuss the formation of the NIH-Lacks Family Partnership when the HeLa genome became public, and the integral involvement of Lacks family members in deciding how the whole genome data from these cells can be used. Dr. Collins will moderate a conversation with Jeri Lacks-Whye and David Lacks focused on the partnership.

  • NIH VideoCast - Annual Advances in Cancer Prevention Lecture: Re-visiting the Causes of Cancer
    • - Sir Richard Peto, FRS, Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology, University of Oxford, UK (2017/07/22)
    • - Category : Special
The Annual Advances in Cancer Prevention Lecture is sponsored by the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP) within the Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) at NCI. It is also part of the course offerings of the annual NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention , but is open to the entire NIH community and general public. This annual lecture addresses current challenges and/or approaches used by investigators to address gaps, advance science, and promote the application of successful strategies in the field of cancer prevention and control. Sir Richard Peto, FRS, will be presenting the 2017 annual lecture on re-visiting the causes of cancer.

Sir Richard Peto, FRS, is Professor of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford, UK, and co-director of the Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU). He collaborated for decades with Richard Doll on cancer epidemiology, and in 1981 they co-authored an influential report, ???The Causes of Cancer ??? Quantitative estimates of avoidable risks of cancer in the US today??? (JNCI 66:1191). Since then, his close attention to the details of how epidemiological evidence and trial evidence is interpreted has shown that the importance of factors such as tobacco, blood pressure and cholesterol have been much underestimated: we actually know more than we thought we did about major avoidable causes of cancer and of vascular disease.

In 1989, Peto was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London for introducing meta-analyses of randomised trials, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1999 for services to epidemiology, and received in 2010 and 2011 the Cancer Research UK and the BMJ Lifetime Achievement Award.
