    The NIH initiative for the electronic submission of grant applications includes multiple methods of transmitting application data to NIH. Some institutions and organizations have chosen to utilize Service Providers who, through their own systems, capture the required data and submit it via a ???System-to-System??? interface with Grants.gov. Five Service Providers have developed their products using NIH support through the SBIR program; these five Service Providers are being given the opportunity to present their software, technology information and services.     Translational Research in Clinical Oncology (TRACO)

    Recent advances in understanding cancer biology are beginning to be translated into improvements in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the post-genome era, we increasingly rely on strong collaboration between basic and clinical scientists to develop novel approaches for treatment of human disease. The intramural program of the NCI is one of the largest centers for cancer research in the world, with over 300 Principal Investigators, and has a major role in development and implementation of many of new technologies, such as genomics and proteomics.

    Dr. Kerr received his Ph.D. in cell biology from Vanderbilt University, did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute and was on faculty at Vanderbilt before entering government service with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He then became Director for Biodefense Policy for the Homeland Security Council before accepting his current position earlier this year. As one of his responsibilities in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Dr. Kerr is tasked with promoting greater collaboration among the interagency, academic and private sectors to improve intelligence related to biological threats.

    A number of new imaging methods make it possible to monitor and quantify molecular and cellular processes noninvasively in a variety of tissues. The radiotracer 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is particularly useful for studying inflammatory processes via positron-emisson tomography (PET), because it is taken up at accelerated rates in foci of inflammation. In this lecture, Dr. Dan Schuster will describe the use of FDG-PET to visualize pulmonary inflammation in experimental studies in laboratory animals and human volunteers, and will discuss potential applications of such techniques to the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.

As a major defense against environmental damage to cells DNA repair is present in all organisms examined including bacteria, yeast, drosophila, fish, amphibians, rodents and humans. The members of the DNA Repair Interest Group perform research in areas including DNA repair enzymology and fine structure, mutagenesis, gene and cell cycle regulation, protein structure, and human disease.
