- The advent of the Human Genome Project has transformed biology by providing a genetics parts list of all genes and proteins, by fueling the contention biology is an informational science, and by catalyzing the emergence of biological information (e.g., rapid DNA sequencing or DNA chips). From this has emerged a new approach to biology termed systems biology???centered on the idea one can study biological systems by delineating the relationships of all of their component elements???and, hence, come to understand the resulting systems properties. I will discuss these important points, give several examples of systems approaches, and conclude by discussing the profound change systems biology will engender in medicine???moving us toward a predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine.

-
- - NCI (2010/03/04)
- - Category : NCI Nanotechnology
- The Office of Technology and Industrial Relations, Office of the Director, National Cancer Institute, will hold a pre-application meeting for investigators planning to submit applications in response to Request for Applications (RFA) to be released under the NCI Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer, including "Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence" (U54) and "Cancer Nanotechnology Platforms" (R01).
This meeting will provide prospective applicants with an opportunity in a public meeting to receive answers to their questions about the RFA. Representatives from the following offices will be available to answer questions relevant to applications responding to these RFAs: Office of Technology and Industrial Relations (OTIR), NCI; Division of Cancer Biology, NCI; Grants Administration Branch, NCI; and the Special Review and Resources Branch, NCI. Staff will be available to discuss the intent and requirements of the RFA.

Recent advances in understanding cancer biology are beginning to be translated into improvements in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In the post-genome era, we increasingly rely on strong collaboration between basic and clinical scientists to develop novel approaches for treatment of human disease. The intramural program of the NCI is one of the largest centers for cancer research in the world, with over 300 Principal Investigators, and has a major role in development and implementation of many of new technologies, such as genomics and proteomics.

- - The NIH Work/Life Center (WLC) (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Work/Life Center
- That which doesn't break us makes us stronger! You've heard this statement before in difficult times. As an adult, you've developed coping skills to help you navigate change in your life, both expected and unexpected, and build resiliency. How can you help your child deal with similar changes, given that they see the world through a different lens? Attend this seminar to understand children's emotional response to changes and events. Learn to listen effectively and help your child to cope with setbacks, disappointment and stress.

- Commitment and Cannibalism in a Bacterium
-
- - Richard Losick, Ph.D., Harvard (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
- Certain bacteria have evolved an elaborate response to conditions of nutrient limitation in which they metamorphose into a resting cell or spore that can resist extremes of environment and time. But what if nutrient limitation is fleeting? Bacteria that willy-nilly launch into the multi-hour process of spore formation in response to fluctuating nutrient availability might be at a competitive disadvantage relative to non-spore forming bacteria. On the other hand, dallying in response to a famine might deplete energy reserves needed for successful morphogenesis. In other words, the decision to sporulate is not to be taken lightly!
