  • Demystifying Medicine - Epilepsy
    • - Michael Rogawski, NINDS and William Theodore, NINDS (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Demystifying Medicine
The course includes presentation of patients, pathology, diagnosis and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward Ph.D. students, fellows, and staff, it is also of interest to medical students and clinicians. The course is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components which are presented by NIH staff and outside invitees.

  • DNA Repair in 3D
    • - Dr. Wei Yang, NIDDK (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : DNA Repair
The DNA Repair Interest Group is concerned with all forms of DNA damage and repair. As a major defense against environmental damage to cells DNA repair is present in all organisms examined including bacteria, yeast, drosophila, fish, amphibians, rodents and humans. The members of the DNA Repair Interest Group perform research in areas including DNA repair enzymology and fine structure, mutagenesis, gene and cell cycle regulation, protein structure, and human disease.

  • Knowledge Management and You!
    • - Douglas Weidner, KM Institute, Chairman of the Board (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Special
What is knowledge management? How does it apply to my work at NIH? How can it help our organization to provide even more robust service to the public and to our other stakeholders? Knowledge management addresses how we can best develop and support the growth and retention of our staff and their vast fund of intellectual capital. KM best practices optimize the development, capture and application of our intellectual capital; it supports and facilitates knowledge sharing among our colleagues; and it provides rich forums for knowledge discovery and creation. This optimization of our intellectual capital promotes better decision making and encourages peer driven innovation and problem solving. Douglas Weidner is an early adopter and innovator of KM for Northrop Grumman and a consultant for Defense, World Bank, United Nations, NASA and others. He will provide an overview of the KM field; describe specific KM techniques and technologies; and share KM success stories.

  • Chemistry in Living Systems: New Tools for Probing the Glycome
    • - Carolyn Bertozzi, Ph.D., UC Berkeley and HHMI (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
A major lesson from eukaryotic genome sequencing projects is that the absolute number of genes an organism's genome encodes is not the best parameter for defining complexity of function. It appears that the complex functions associated with human health and disease are determined by combinatorial expansion of genomic information in the form of posttranslational modifications. Of these, the most complex and ubiquitous is glycosylation, highlighting the importance of glycomics as a new frontier in the biosciences. This presentation will focus on new chemical approaches for profiling glycosylation at the systems level in both cells and living animals.

    • - Administration for Children and Families (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Conferences
The theme for this year???s conference, Child Support Enforcement ??? 30 Years and Counting!, reflects the Child Support Enforcement program???s 30-year commitment to improving the lives of America???s families. The program???s original goal???financial support for families???remains its basis today. As we look to the future, we know that working effectively with our partners is vital to improving services to those families, and key to better overall family outcomes. We look forward to applying the strategies in our roadmap for the next five years???the national child support enforcement strategic plan for 2005-2009.

  • Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndromes: Different Names, Different Concepts, Different Goals
    • - Gerald M. Reaven, M.D., Stanford University School of Medicine (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
Sensitivity to insulin-mediated glucose disposal varies widely in the population at large (1), with approximately 50% of the variability resulting from differences in degree of adiposity (25%) and physical fitness (25%). The other 50% is almost certainly genetic in origin, with powerful ethnic differences. Irrespective of the origin, when insulin resistant individuals cannot maintain the degree of hyperinsulinemia needed to overcome the insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes develops (2,3). However, the majority of insulin resistant individuals are able to sustain the degree of compensatory hyperinsulinemia needed to maintain normal or near-normal glucose tolerance.
