- Coronavirus Receptor Recognition and Entry
-
- - Kathryn V. Holmes, PhD, University of Colorado (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
- The spike glycoprotein (S) of coronaviruses is a very large type 1 viral fusion protein that recognizes receptors on host cells and mediates membrane fusion and virus entry. Several coronaviruses can also bind to host cells by a hemagglutinin-esterase (HE) glycoprotein derived from influenza C HE. Most coronaviruses cause disease only in one host species, although several have a broader host range. The S protein is an important determinant of species specificity, tissue tropism and virulence. Receptors for S proteins of three coronaviruses have been identified, and the receptor-binding domains of the corresponding viral S proteins have been identified. The interactions of human and animal coronaviruses with their receptors will be used as examples to consider how the SARS coronavirus may have emerged from an
animal reservoir.

- Potassium Channels
-
- - Lily Jan, Ph.D., HHMI and UCSF (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
- Potassium channels serve a wide range of functions, as evident from the linkage of potassium channel mutations to diseases of the brain, heart, muscle, kidney, pancreas, and neural crest-derived tissues. For these channels to serve their physiological functions, they have to be at the right place, in the right number and open at the right time. Recent studies of these different aspects of potassium channel regulation will be discussed.
