- How Viruses Enter Their Host Cells
-
- - Ari Helenius, Ph.D., Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
- Most viruses enter animal cells by endocytosis followed by low pH-activated membrane penetration from endosomes. Recent studies using real time video microscopy and biochemical techniques have shown that simian virus 40 (SV40), polyoma virus (Py), and some other viruses make use of alternative pathways that by-pass the classical endocytic organelles. After binding to gangliosides on the cell surface, SV40 activates caveolar endocytosis, and is transported to a novel organelle that we have called the caveosome. Polyoma virus uses a similar lipid-raft dependent pathway, but internalization is independent of caveolae. From the intermediate compartments these viruses move to the endoplasmic reticulum, and later via the cytosol into the nucleus.

-
- - Valerie Williams, Ph.D., Researcher, RAND Corporation (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Special
- BRHIG is open to everyone interested in the history of biomedical research at NIH or elsewhere. In addition to the presentation and discussion of work-in-progress, the group will serve as a forum for discussion of issues of common interest, such as the identification and development of source materials; the uses and pitfalls of oral histories in research; and collaborations between historians and the biomedical community.
