- Environment and Society Since 1900: A Global Perspective
-
- - John R. McNeill, Ph.D., Georgetown University (2010/03/04)
- - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
In this presentation I aim to sketch the general trajectory of environmental change in the last century and to explain why that trajectory followed the course that it did. First I will try to provide a quantitative sense of the dimensions of several kinds of environmental changes, all on a global basis. This includes changes in land use and land cover, air and water pollution, water use, biodiversity among other categories. What follows is an effort to explain what social, economic, and political trends have been most consequential for environmental change, which involves discussion of energy systems, population, politics, and technology, among others. Several regional and local examples, ranging from Soviet industrialization efforts to the implications of chains saws, relieve the otherwise relentless attention to global-level analysis.

- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health will host an all-day scientific workshop at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, to address research needs on severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The workshop will feature international experts in the fields of coronavirus biology, vaccine development, antiviral drug development, laboratory diagnosis, SARS epidemiology, etiology and clinical management.
The purpose of this meeting is to identify the scientific, technical and logistical challenges that must be addressed to develop vaccines, antiviral therapeutics and other interventions in response to SARS. The meeting is designed to promote scientific exchange of ideas and develop elements of a robust research response.

Immunity to infection is mediated by T lymphocytes, specialized cells that use highly evolved recognition elements to maintain protection against foreign microbes. T lymphocytes differentiate from a naive state to an effector state. The latter is characterized by the ability to secrete large amounts of potent molecules, termed cytokines, that collectively orchestrate and focus the attack against pathogens. Different types of pathogenic organisms require different types of immune responses, that are defined by the spectrum of cytokines produced by the effector T lymphocytes.

- NIH staff will conduct a technical assistance and information-sharing workshop to allow potential applicants to discuss and clarify any issues or questions related to RFA-RM-04-017. The NIH is also seeking public comments regarding the potential use of a deviation to the standard patent rights clause to limit the rights of MLSCN center investigators to retain title to certain subject inventions involving the use of proprietary compounds in order to access and assemble the largest collection of compounds as possible for this project. The proposed deviated clause would provide title or exclusive rights to the provider of the proprietary compounds (for further information, refer to the RFA).
