Each year, more than 180,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer, the most common type of cancer among women in this country. If current breast cancer rates stay constant, a female born today has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer sometime during her life.

The NIH Office of AIDS Research will sponsor a seminar by Laurie Garrett, Pulitzer Prize-winning health and science reporter for Newsday. Garrett's first book, "The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance", analyzed and predicted the reemergence of a number of communicable diseases. Her new book, "Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health", provides a chilling exploration of the crisis that threatens public health around the world. Her reporting has taken her to India during the pneumonic plague, to Zaire during the Ebola virus epidemic, and to the former Soviet Socialist Republics. She has written extensively on the threat of biological terrorism. Please join us for this lively and provocative seminar.
