  • NIH VideoCast - The Human Placenta Project: Understanding Human Placental Structure and Function in Real Time (Day 1)
    • - NICHD, NIH (2016/11/24)
    • - Category : Conferences
The placenta is the least understood human organ and arguably one of the more important organs in the body, not only for the health of a woman and her fetus during pregnancy but also for the lifelong health of both. To address this lack of knowledge, the NICHD believes a concerted effort, the Human Placenta Project, would make substantial inroads.

NIDCD Beyond the Lab, Understanding Communication Disorders

Designed for administrative and support staff as well as scientists, the Beyond the Lab, Understanding Communication Disorders speaker series gives the NIH community an opportunity to learn about the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorder?? (NIDCD) research and research advances.

Learn about the NIDCD?? Audiology Unit, its contribution to biomedical research and the NIH mission, and its involvement in research evaluating a new therapy for Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC). NPC is a rare cholesterol storage disorder that primarily affects children and is often fatal by early adulthood. NPC damages a variety of organs in the body, including the ear, but primarily affects the brain.

As part of its mission, the NIDCD Audiology Unit provides hearing tests to patients with rare diseases such as NPC being treated at the National Institutes of Health?? Clinical Center. NIDCD intramural scientists were the first to detail the affects of NPC on hearing, and are now members of a team, led by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), working on a clinical trial to test a promising new therapy for the disease.

The Muscular Dystrophy Community Assistance, Research, and Education Amendments of 2001 ("MD-CARE Act"; P.L. 107-84) authorized the establishment of the Muscular Dystrophy Coordinating Committee (MDCC) to coordinate activities across NIH and with other Federal health programs and activities relevant to the various forms of muscular dystrophy including Duchenne, myotonic, facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy and other forms of muscular dystrophy. The purpose of this meeting is to bring together committee members, representing government agencies, patient advocacy groups, other voluntary health organizations, and patients and their families to update one another on progress relevant to the Action Plan for the Muscular Dystrophies and to coordinate activities and discuss gaps and opportunities leading to better understanding of the muscular dystrophies, advances in treatments, and improvements in patients??and their families??lives.

  • NIH VideoCast - Immune Modulation Therapy and Imaging: What can we do in clinical trials now?
    • - Cancer Imaging Program, NCI, NIH (2016/11/24)
    • - Category : Conferences
Immunotherapy is rapidly becoming a successful strategy in treating malignancies. NCI is investing a large percentage of its resources to evaluate the role of various immunotherapies ??either alone or in combination with other cytotoxic or cytostatic therapies. Assessment of tumor response with anatomic imaging and with the standard RECIST criteria has not been very helpful in patients receiving immunotherapy. Therefore, the Cancer Imaging Program is actively pursuing alternative methods of tumor response assessment in this setting. The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) is partnering with CIP to conduct this workshop on May 2nd.

  • NIH VideoCast - NCI-ISIGS-WMIS Workshop on Regulatory Pathways for Clinical Use of Optical Methods and Exogenous Targets for Cancer Detection
    • - Cancer Imaging Program, NCI, NIH (2016/11/24)
    • - Category : Conferences
Optical imaging is rapidly becoming a useful tool in detecting surface malignancies as well as improving the tumor margins during surgical resections, thereby potentially catching lesions in a less advanced state and also decreasing tumor recurrence. However, there is a gap in the pace of clinical evaluation of these novel agents and devices, partly due to a lack of understanding of the regulatory pathways that need to be followed. The mission of the Cancer Imaging Program includes facilitating clinical evaluation of promising methodologies that can improve cancer care. To this end, we are hosting a one day workshop along with the FDA and two professional societies ??the International Society of Image Guided Surgery (ISIGS) and the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS) to discuss these issues on May 4th.

ACHDNC provides expert advice and recommendations to the Secretary about the development of newborn screening activities, technologies, policies, guidelines, and programs for effectively reducing morbidity and mortality in newborns and children having, or at risk for, heritable disorders. In addition, the Committee?? recommendations regarding additional conditions/heritable disorders for screening that have been adopted by the Secretary are included in the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) and constitute part of the comprehensive guidelines supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The committee is composed of 15 voting members. The Committee will hear presentations and discussions on topics including newborn screening long-term follow-up and prenatal education regarding newborn screening bloodspots. The Committee will also review draft reports from the Pilot Study and Cost Analysis workgroups and hear updates from the Committee?? subcommittees on Laboratory Standards and Procedures, Follow-up and Treatment, and Education and Training. Tentatively, the Committee is expected to review and/or vote on whether or not the nominated condition Guanidinoacetate Methyltransferase deficiency should be referred for a full evidence-based review.
