The goal of the 2016 Trans-Agency Blood Brain Interface Workshop is to bring together experts to examine key challenges and proposed recommendations associated with the interface between the circulatory system and the brain. The workshop will cut across the interface and include sessions on upstream blood biomarkers as well as targeted drug delivery, highlighting the potential therapeutic role of exosomes for diagnostic applications as well as targeted drug delivery, and brain sequelae that release biomarkers into the circulation. A common theme that has emerged on both sides of the interface is the role of the immune system and the inflammasome. The Blood-Brain Barrier is an under-represented scientific area at NHLBI and there is a need for stimulation of this space in the blood sciences. There is a growing body of work around exosomes and extracellular vesicle transport and that these microvesicles can be harnessed for diagnostic applications as well as targeted drug delivery. Developments in microphysiological platform technologies are also making future diagnostic strategies possible. The workshop will include experts in the Blood Sciences, BBB biology, BBB modeling and Technology development including exosome therapeutics, platform technologies, and nanotechnology. Current NIH efforts in these areas can be leveraged for targeted therapeutic development.

4th Annual NCI Center for Strategic Scientific Initiatives (CCSI) Science Day

The CSSI Science Day meeting is held annually, and the goal is to convene and engage CSSI Staff, outside NIH and NCI staff, and CSSI program/initiative stakeholders to share their ideas and programmatic advancements to hopefully stimulate new and exciting pilot projects and collaborations. This meeting will be supported by CSSI OD Offices which includes the Office of Cancer Clinical Proteomics Research, and the Office of Cancer Nanotechnology Research.

CSSI goals and mission are designed to fulfill a fundamental need in the cancer research community by finding and enabling investigator driven, research and team oriented, technology based projects. Given these distinct goals, the primary goal of the meeting is to share new scientific insights and ideas and best practices, with grantees and staff with the hope of discussing unique/novel opportunities.
