    • - Category : American Health Information Community (AHIC)
The American Health Information Community (the Community), is a committee established under the Federal Advisory Committee Act (Pub. L. No. 92-463, 5 U.S.C., App.), by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. The Community will advise the Secretary and recommend specific actions to achieve a common interoperability framework for health information technology (IT) and serve as a forum for participation from a broad range of stakeholders to provide input on achieving interoperability of health IT. The Community is made up of 17 voting members, including the Chair, and members have been appointed by the Secretary.

  • Neural Systems Involved in Extinction Depend on When Extinction Occurs
    • - Michael Davis, PH.D., Emory University School of Medicine (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Neuroscience
Dr. Davis studies the physiological bases of learning and memory and brain areas involved in fear, anxiety and stress. He works with a reflex behavior that is readily quantifiable and known to be altered by prior experience. In many species, including man, a loud noise elicits a startle response, which occurs very rapidly. His laboratory has determined the neural pathway that mediates acoustic startle in the rat, which consists of three synapses in the brainstem and spinal cord. Although startle is very fast and has a relatively simple circuit, it is exquisitely sensitive to changes in the environment, to drugs, as well as prior learning, such as fear conditioning. Startle thus provides a brainstem and spinal reflex system that is modulated by higher brain systems.

NIH Proteomics Interest Group Symposium "Biomarkers: Promise vs. Reality"

A one-half day event to inform basic researchers, clinicians, and administrators on issues regarding biomarker discovery and validation

ProtIG was formed after the May 2001 Symposium and is organizing monthly seminars in relevant areas of proteomics, including talks on separation and protein identification methods, determination of post-translational modifications, protein-protein interactions, and bioinformatics and data management.

  • Clearing Your Mind of Neurotransmitters: Functional Impact of Neurotransmitter Transporter Gene Variants
    • - Randy Blakely, Ph.D., Vanderbilt University (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Neuroscience
Dr. Blakely???s research explores the molecular basis for neurotransmitter transporter structure, function and regulation. He uses chimera, site-directed mutagenesis and site-specific chemical modification strategies to explore the topology and quaternary structure of biogenic amine transporters. He is currently evaluating what molecules control the proper localization and activity of transporter proteins using genetic (C.elegans), and molecular biologic methods. He is also evaluating whether human transporter polymorphisms impact the biosynthesis, trafficking and function of transporters and confer increased risk for autonomic, neurologic and mental disorders.

More information regarding this important research can be obtained from his website at
