  • Virus-Induced Immunity and Immunodeficiency Seminar
    • - Dr. Rolf Zinkernagel, Head, Institute of Experimental Immunology, University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland. (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Special
The NIH Immunology Interest Group will sponsor a lecture by Nobel Laureate Rolf Zinkernagel entitled, "Virus-Induced Immunity and Immunodeficiency". Professor Zinkernagel received the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Peter Doherty, for the discovery of the specificity of cell-mediated immunity. Their groundbreaking research, published in 1974, conclusively demonstrated the requirement for the cellular immune system to simultaneously recognize both foreign molecules and the self molecules of the MHC in order to kill virus-infected cells. This discovery expanded the known functions of MHC antigens beyond their role in transplantation and established their importance in the immune response to pathogens. Professor Zinkernagel, Head of the Institute of Experimental Immunology in Zurich since 1992, is the author of nearly 400 scientific papers.
