AMD and cataract are the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in the United States. Based on many clinical studies, it is apparent that the frequency of both diseases increases dramatically after age 60. Although excellent treatments for cataract are available, there are no equivalent treatments for AMD. As the average lifespan of our population increases, the number of people who develop AMD will increase dramatically in the years ahead. Unless successful means of prevention or treatment are developed, blindness from AMD -- and its importance as a public health problem -- will increase.

    • - Category : Special
It is estimated that there may be as many as 7.5 million children and adults with mental retardation in the United States. These individuals face unique health challenges resulting in lower life expectancies and lower quality of life. Surgeon General David Satcher has initiated an effort to focus the attention of the nation on the health and health care needs of children and adults with mental retardation.

  • The National Institutes of Health and the NASA Astrobiology Institute Joint Symposium
    • - Areas selected for initial consideration at this symposium are biofilms, oxidative damage/biological forms of iron, and extremophiles. Future interactions are certain to touch on areas ranging from remote sensing to the role of water in life.

This symposium is sponsored by the NASA Astrobiology Institute and the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Sign language interpreters will be provided (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Conferences
The NASA Astrobiology Institute and the National Institutes of Health share the common goal of understanding the fundamental processes of living systems - including such areas as the origin and evolution of microbial populations, the mechanisms of adaptation to stressful environments, and the development of new technology to advance these and other areas of research. The perspectives of these institutions differ dramatically, but when combined generate an exciting forum for the development of novel ideas and directions for future research and collaboration. To this end, NAI and NIH are holding a joint symposium to initiate a dialog on the scientist-to-scientist level which we hope will ultimately lead to joint projects.

  • NIH Consensus Development Conference on Diagnosis and Management of Dental Caries Throughout Life (Day 1)
    • - Sponsored by the NIH Office of Medical Applications of Research and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Conferences
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will sponsor a Consensus Development Conference on Diagnosis and Management of Dental Caries Throughout Life on March 26-28, 2001.

Although great strides have been made in dental health in recent decades, dental caries, or tooth decay, remains common in the United States. Caries result when certain species of bacteria in the mouth establish a sticky colony called a biofilm or dental plaque, on the teeth. The bacteria generate acids that dissolve minerals in tooth enamel, resulting in the formation of opaque white or brown spots beneath the surface of the enamel.
