Electronic Warfare : EA-6B Aircraft Modernization and Related Issues for Congress 스크랩

Congress and the Department of Defense face difficult and potentially costly choices when considering updating a key facet of the U.S. electronic warfare force structure. Presently, the Navy’s EA-6B Prowler is the only airborne radar jamming system available to protect Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force aircraft. The Prowler, though still capable, is aging and in short supply. Its retirement is scheduled for 2015.

Since cancellation in late 1994 of the Tri-Service Standoff Attack Missile (TSSAM) program, various alternatives have been proposed, including development of a new missile or a derivative of currently operational missiles. This CRS report focuses on six air-to-surface munition programs: (1) the Joint Air-to- Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM), (2) the Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response (SLAM-ER), (3) the Joint Stand-Off Weapon (JSOW), (4) the Conventional Air-Launched Cruise Missile (CALCM), (5) the AGM-142 missile, and (6) the AGM-130 missile. All of these weapons are launched from aircraft, in contrast to ship and ground-based missile launchers.

This report summarizes the history and development of today’s international satellite communications industry, and the organizational changes within Intelsat, Inmarsat, and Comsat. In addition, the report examines Congress’ efforts to affect the continuing development of these three satellite organizations, the issues concerning specific legislative provisions, the current status of this legislation, and the most recent developments since the passage of related legislation. Finally, Appendix A provides a history of the creation of all three satellite communications entities.

Military Aircraft, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Program : Background and Issues for Congress 스크랩

The super Hornet successfully completed its six-month operational testing and evaluation (OT&E) phase in November 1999. Based on this successful operational evaluation, on June 16, 2000 the Navy announced the signing of a multi-year contract with Boeing Company for the F/A-18E/F full rate production. Under the five- year contract, the Navy agrees to pay $8.9 billion for 222 aircraft. The Navy will buy 36 aircraft in fiscal year 2000, 42 aircraft in fiscal year 2001, and 48 aircraft for each of the next three years.
