The outcome of the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) during this reporting year - awarding an additional ?0m of research funds to the MRC - was excellent news for science and the users of science. We have been able to extend our plans for implementing our research strategy ?particularly in our main priority areas namely the post-genome challenge and the health of the public. Some important new initiatives have already come on stream as shown in this report ?for example the new Prion Unit set up in London where Professor John Collinge and his colleagues will bring genomics, clinical and public health approaches to bear on the questions raised by possible links between vCJD and BSE. Many other new initiatives from the CSR allocation will come to fruition in the academic year 1999/2000, and will feature in next year？s report. The year has also seen a steady rise in the number of awards made under our new funding schemes for the support of research in universities, first introduced in 1997.
