New Form NSF : find out why (vol. 1, No.2 Winter, 1998) Science & Engineering Outreach Programs of the National Science Foundation Preview of NSF 50 Celebrating 50 Years "Where Discoveries Begin" NSF 50, the 50th anniversary celebraion of the National Science Foundation(NSF) was founded in 1950. The agency, with the help of groups both internal and exteranl to NSF, will commemorate the event with programs and special events designed to further NSF's outreach mission:to engage the public in the science, engineering and technology of everyday life. Some of the nation's top scientists and engineers convened NSF's Public Advisory Committee(PAC) in October 1998 to begin planning NSF50 events. NSF Director Rita Colwell and former NSF Director Neal Lane have asked the PAC to formalize NSF Director (1972-76) and former Assistant to President General Ford for Science and Tecnology. Committee members are representative of the scientists and engineers whose research and education projects have been funded by NSF since 1950

Transformation of economy, policy and other fields of life in the Czech Republic has made such a progress that it has come in sight to be necessary to deal in more detail with much longterm problem. The Czech Republic as the Central European country of a moderate size can only base its future prosperity on the full involvement into international trade. The geographical location and cultural and industrial tradition of the country together with a high level of culture of its citizens allow and even require gradual increase of the deal of the Czech Republic in international trade as the country of origin of the high quality,high technology and advanced products. Our country has to support the trade with goods in which results of domestic research and development are applied and in this line to involve satisfactorily into international co-operation. The publication yields fundamental information on tradition, present stage, and presumptions of further progress of research and development in the Czech Republic. The publication also presents information on activities of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and central government bodies in the field of research and development are applied and in this line to involve satisfactorily into international co-operation.
