    Neuroscience Seminar Series

Brian K. Kaspar, Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Principal Investigator at The Ohio State University and The Research Institute at Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. His graduate education was at University of California San Diego specializing in molecular pathology. After graduate study, he performed post-graduate work at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, CA in the laboratory of Dr.Fred H. Gage where he pioneered various methodologies in viral gene transfer for neurological disorders. After finishing his training in 2004, he moved to The Ohio State/Nationwide Childrens to start a laboratory focused on understanding and developing treatments for severe neuromuscular disorders. In 2009, Dr. Kaspars group identified the first viral vector capable of traversing the blood brain barrier and utilized these findings to treat various neurological disorders including spinal muscular atrophy, resulting in a number of high impact publications and advancements towards human clinical trials.

Additionally, the Kaspar Laboratory has pioneered using astrocytes derived from post-mortem human familial and sporadic ALS to model the non-cell autonomous related toxicity towards motor neurons. Dr. Kaspar serves as an Editor for the journal Molecular Therapy.

Optimization of HIV prevention strategies remains one of our greatest scientific challenges. Phenomenal progress has been made in understanding the biology of HIV infection, such that eradication of the virus now seems feasible. New clinical interventions are being developed to prevent and manage the disease. This forum will present an update on HIV prevention and control as we continue toward realization of an AIDS-free generation.

    • - Michele Basso, PhD, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior UCLA (2012/11/21)
    • - Category : Neuroscience
    Neuroscience Seminar Series

Understanding how the activity of brain cells and neuronal circuits gives rise to complex human behavior and thought lies at the forefront of perceptual and cognitive neuroscience. The basal ganglia are a set of forebrain nuclei that, together with the cerebral cortex, play a role in many neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases that result in disordered perception, cognition and action. In this seminar, Dr. Basso shall describe their recent experiments exploring the role of the basal ganglia in cognitive processes such as memory and action choice. Their results show that understanding fundamental brain mechanisms of cognitive processing may hold the key to unlocking the causes of enigmatic symptoms seen in diseases such as Parkinsons disease.
