  • Diversity, Body Size and Diabetes: Genetics Without Genotyping
    • - Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, M.D., University of California School of Medicine (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
An epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes is exploding in the United States and elsewhere. Many scientists are presently searching for genetic causes of obesity and diabetes, in hope of finding targets for treatment and prevention. Meanwhile, epidemiologic studies of geographic differences, time trends, age at onset, ethnic and racial differences offer clues about the role of nature and nurture in the etiology of obesity and of diabetes. The results from epidemiologic studies of different racial and ethnic groups are particularly provocative. Why is obesity, and/or unfavorable body fat distribution, more common among people of color? Why are "the colorless people" more protected for a given weight or body size?

  • National Cancer Institute Awards Ceremony
    • - The National Cancer Institute, NIH (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Special

Since the National Cancer Act was passed by Congress in 1971, making cancer research a national priority, persistent research efforts have led to significant progress in cancer detection, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. These efforts have resulted in an overall decrease in cancer death rates, and in more effective treatments for patients. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the lead federal agency working to prevent cancer and help patients live longer and healthier lives. Drawing on the knowledge and expertise of researchers at laboratories, cancer centers, and universities all across the country, the NCI strives to conduct and sponsor research that will continue to benefit everyone.

The goal of the Human Brain Project (HBP) is to provide funding to create a distributed system of web based databases, analytical tools and data driven computational models. This will provide a venue for data sharing and will enable the integration of structural, functional and dynamic data. Neuroinformatics combines the concepts and principles developed in neuroscience research with those from the fields of computer science and information technology (informatics) research. The creation of a distributed neuroscience information management system will allow scientists to more easily integrate data both within and across systems and create new knowledge toward understanding nervous system development and function.
