    • - Category : Linking Science and Business - SBIR/STTR Products Showcase
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) utilizes the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants to fund translational research through its Multimedia Technology Health Communication SBIR/STTR Grant Program. This Program solicits cancer prevention and control applications for medical and community settings that use a variety of media technology to translate cancer research into programs, interventions, systems, networks, or products needed by the public or primary care professionals to reduce cancer risk or improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.

The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series

One operational measure of our limited understanding of biology is our inability to predict the behavior of biological systems given knowledge of their present states. Under the Alpha project, we are striving to bring into being computational methods and experimental tools to gain the ability to predict the quantitative behavior of a well-understood and experimentally tractable intracellular signal transduction/information-processing network. This regulatory system governs the response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to mating pheromone secreted by yeast of the opposite sex; it is a prototype for G protein coupled receptor and MAP kinase signaling in higher organisms.

  • Amygdala-Dependent Memory: What Comes Next?
    • - Michela Gallagher, PH.D., Johns Hopkins University (2010/03/04)
    • - Category : Neuroscience
Dr. Gallagher's lab is interested in neural systems that serve a role in memory and attention. Behavioral studies in laboratory rodents are conducted in conjuction with a range of neurobiological techniques. For example, they examine the behavioral effects of removing specific neurons in the brain with newly developed immunotoxins, they measure information encoding by neurons in awake behaving animals, and they use molecular biological methods to assess the expression of genes and proteins involved in neural plasticity. One problem under study concerns the effects of aging on memory. Other research in her laboratory includes studies of subcortical neural circuitry and mechanisms used to regulate cortical processing.
