On November 25, 2001, a Massachusetts company, Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), announced that it had created the world's first cloned human embryos. The cloned embryos survived only for a few hours. ACT has indicated that it intends to use such embryos to derive stem cells in producing new therapies for diseases like diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The possibility of using cloning technology not just for therapeutic purposes but also for reproducing human beings raises profound moral and ethical questions.

Imagery Intelligence: Issues for Congress 스크랩

Congress has been concerned with satellite imagery because of its critical importance and its high costs. Independent commissions established by Congress to assess the state of the imagery intelligence effort have concluded that significant changes need to be made in the way the nation's imagery effort is conducted. There is a consensus that greater emphasis should be placed on better collection targeting and improving processing, exploitation, an dissemination; that greater attention should be given to acquiring commercial imagery; and that the management of the imagery effort may need to be changed.

Alternative Transportation Fuels and Vehicles: Energy, Environment, and Development Issues 스크랩

Three key laws, the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 (P.L. 100- 494), the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (P.L. 101-549), and the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (P.L. 102-486), as well as three Executive Orders, support the development and commercialization of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles. These legislative acts and administrative actions provide tax incentives to purchase AFVs, promote the expansion of alternative fueling infrastructure, and require the use of AFVs by various public and private entities. Several bills in the 107th Congress propose to expand these programs or create further incentives for alternative fuel and vehicle use. Opponents argue that there are other, more cost-effective ways of promoting clean air and energy conservation. This report reviews these issues.

Digital Television: An Overview 스크랩

No major legislation has yet been introduced into the 107th Congress directly related to digital television. However, congressional committees are keenly monitoring the pace and progress of the digital transition. A number of options for congressional action have been proposed. These include: mandating digital tuners; mandating dual carriage of digital and analog programming; accelerating the vacating of analog television spectrum; legislating a process whereby interoperability standards and copyright protection technologies will be implemented; and extending, strengthening, and/or altering the transition deadlines. While stakeholders are working to resolve some of these issues, pressure is building on Congress to act as the DTV transition deadlines become closer.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA): Overview, FY2003 Budget in Brief, and Issues for Congress 스크랩

For FY2002, Congress appropriated $14.9 billion for NASA. The request for FY2003 is $15.1 billion. Among the issues facing NASA are: the future of the agency under its new Administrator, Sean O'Keefe; cost growth in the International Space Station program; efforts to privatize the space shuttle; prioritization of space science programs; funding for aeronautics; and a new initiative to develop nuclear power and propulsion technologies.
