We assessed the feasibility of identifying superior oil-tolerant genotypes of Spartina patens and Spartina alterniflora, dominant brackish and salt marsh grasses, respectively. Ten genotypes each of S. patens and S. alterniflora wre established in a uniform soil that was oiled with South Louisiana crude oil at a rate of 5 L oil M-2 for S. patens and 8 L oil M-2 for S. alterniflora. Both species displayed significant intraspecific variation to oiling in a number of plant growth response variables. In each species factor analysis revealed that three superior, oil-tolerant genotypes characteristically displayed less tissue death, maintained higher plant productivity, and demonstrated a greater ability to successfully produce new shoots through the oiled soil. Analysis of oil-degradation factor scores in S. patens further revealed that tow of the three oil-tolerant genotypes demonstrated significantly greater oil-degradation potential than other genotypes. This study has shown that there is a tremendous amount of natural genetic variation in oil tolerance in Gulf Coast populations of S. patens and S. alterniflora that may potentially be explited in wetland rehabilitation (restoration and creation) and the bioremediation (phytoremediation) of oiled brackish and salt marshes.

The 107th Congress is addressing a broad range of civilian, military, and commercial space issues. International cooperation and competition in space are being affected by the world economic situation and the post-Cold War political climate. President Clinton's 1993 decision to merge NASA's space station program with Russia's is symbolic of the dramatic changes, and the risks.

Nuclear Warhead 스크랩

Rocky Flats Plant, near Denver, was the only U.S. site that made pits, the fissile cores of thermonuclear warheads, on a large scale. The Department of Energy (DOE) suspended pit production there in 1989. Since then, the United States has been unable to make any pits that qualify for the stockpile, so it cannot make all-new nuclear warheads of existing or advanced new designs. Two pit projects are underway. This report presents construction costs for the two projects that might total some $5 billion. It presents DOE's plan and issues for Congress.

There are numerous potential legislative initiatives available to Congress to affect the Agreed Framework. A certain role for Congress will involve Administration requests for appropriations to help finance the costs of the various benefits to North Korea. Moreover, Congress under law will have to review a prospective U.S.-North Korea nuclear agreement, which the Administration will have to negotiate before light water reactors with U.S. technology can be sent to North Korea.

Some question the need for aircraft such as the F-22 at a time when the production of comparable aircraft in other countries is in doubt. Others argue that the F-22 should be developed to counter long-term threats of more advanced air defenses by potential enemies as well as to maintain the U.S. position in aviation technology and production. The airframe will be produced by Lockheed in Marietta, GA, and Ft. Worth, TX, with the Pratt & Whitney engines produced in West Palm Beach, FL.

The Zumwalt (DD-21) class destroyer is the Navy's planned next-generation surface combatant. Two industry teams are now competing for the right to design the ship. On May 31, 2001, the Navy announced that the date for selecting the winning design, which had been delayed from March to May, would be delayed again, until completion of the Quadrennial Defense Review, expected sometime this summer. On June 12, 2001, a special panel on defense transformation stated that it did not view the DD-21 as a transformational weapon. The DD-21 program raises potential issues for Congress regarding the ship's proposed characteristics and cost, technical risk, and defense transformation.
