Arctic Petroleum Development : Implications of Advances in Technology 스크랩

Debate over opening of the coastal plain the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge(ANWR) to petroleum exploration and development is being revived in the 107th Congress. The North Slope is home to the largest oil field in North America, Prudhoe Bay, estimated at 13 billion barrels of oil in 1996. The North Slope is also the site of America's second largest oil field, Kuparuk River, and to the largest oil field discovered in the last decade in the United States, Alpine Field. The North Slope is also home to a diverse, unique, and fragile ecosystem resulting in extensive federal, state, and local regulatory protection. In part because of increased restrictions since the discovery of Prudhoe Bay, operators have developed less environmentally intrusive ways to develop arctic oil, primarily through innovations in technology.

Congress continues to debate NASA's program to build a permanently occupied space station in Earth orbit where astronauts live and conduct research. NASA expects that research performed in the near-zero gravity environment of the space station will result in new discoveries in life sciences, biomedicine, and materials sciences. The program is currently called the International Space Station(ISS); the facility itself does not have a name although individual modules do.

An Information Technology Labor Shortage? Legislation in the 106th Congress 스크랩

Concern about an information technology(IT) labor shortage prompted Congress, in Title IV of P.L. 105-277, to raise for 3 years the ceiling on H-1B visas for skilled temporary alien workers. The law also called on the National Science Foundation to assess employers' future requirements for workers with computer-related skills, the future educaiton/training needs of U.S. students to ensure an adequate supply of workers at requisite skill levels, and the potential costs/benefits to the U.S. economy from admission of foreign workers with science and engineering skills.
