Genome research projects generate enormous quantities of data. Database mining is the process of finding and extracting useful information from raw datasets. Computational genomics has identified a classification of three successive levels for the management and analysis of genetic data in scientific databases. Genome database mining is the identification of the protein-encoding regions of a genome and the assignment of functions to these genes on the basis of sequence similarity homologies against other genes of known function. Gene expression database mining is the identification of intrinsic patterns and relationships in transcriptional expression data generated by large-scale gene expression experiments. Proteome database mining is the identification of intrinsic patterns and relationships in translational expression data generated by large-scale proteomics experiments. Improvements in genome, gene expression and proteome database mining algorithms will enable the prediction of protein function in the context of higher order processes such as the regulation of gene expression, metabolic pathways and signalling cascades. Thus, the final objective of such higher-level functional analysis will be the elucidation of high-resolution structural and functional maps of the human genome. 분석자 서문: 생물정보학의 역사는 생물학의 역사와 더불어 시작하였다고 말하는 학자들도 있으나 그 본격적인 개화는 유전체 연구와 함께라는 것이 일반적인 인식이다. 유전체 연구에서 파생된 막대한 양의 정보는 컴퓨터의 도움이 없이는 도저히 처리될 수 없는 양이었으며, 생물정보학의 뒷받침에 의해서 유전체학은 매우 빠른 속도로 발전할 수 있었다. 유전체학에서 쓰이는 많은 소프트웨어와 대용량 정보를 저장하고 다루는 데이터베이스의 개발이 없었다면 유전체학 자체가 성립 불가능 했었으리 만큼 유전체학이 생물정보학에 의존하는 정도는 매우 깊다. 일례로 최근에 시작한 유전체학의 한 부분인 단일염기다형성 (SNP: Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) 연구는 이제 시작한 지 불과 2년 정도 이지만 전세계적으로 데이터베이스에 모아진 정보의 양은 100만건을 넘어섰으며 앞으로 모아지는 속도는 더 빠르게 증가하고 있다. 이러한 정보의 바다에서 연구자들이 원하는 정보가 어디에 있고 어떻게 찾아야 하며 찾을 때 무엇을 관심을 가지고 주시하여야 하는지를 파악하는 것은 연구의 성패를 가름할 만한 중요한 부분이다. 이 글은 생물정보학이 유전체 연구와 앞으로 중요한 연구분야가 될 것으로 여겨지는 단백질체 연구에 어떻게 기여하고 있으며 연구자들이 중요하게 파악해야 할 점은 무엇인지 또한 원하는 정보를 찾고자 할 때 어떤 데이터베이스를 찾아가야 하고 원하는 정보를 발굴할 때 주의해야 할 점은 무엇인지를 가르쳐주는 길잡이 역할을 해줄 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 이 자료의 분석은 삼성종합기술 에서 molecular genetics 분야에서 연구하고 계신 이연수박사님께서 수고해 주셨습니다. 궁금하신 점은 박사님께 문의하시기 바랍니다. e-mail: yslee2@sait.samsung.co.kr 첨부.
