Medical Design & Manufacturing Conference 2001 스크랩

개요 : Medical Design & Manufacturing Exposition & Conference가 1월 8일부터 10일 까지 미국 캘리포니아 Anaheim 컨벤션센터 에서 열렸다. 매년 2회에 걸쳐 열리는 이 MDM Exposition & Conference에 올해는 16,000명이 참가하여 성황을 이루었는데 여러 분야의 납품업체들의 전시부스가 설치된 Exposition과 Conference가 동시에 열렸다. Conference에서는FDA (Food and Drug Administration)의 Regulatory와 생체 친화성 (Biocompatibility)을 비롯하여 모두 여섯개의 주제로 24개의 세미나가 3일간 열렸다. 특히 이번에는 MDM 컨퍼런스와 함께 Medical Device와 관련된 PLASTEC WEST 2001과 PACIFIC DESIGN & MANUFACTURING SHOW가 같이 열려 더욱 많은 사람들이 참가한 것으로 알려졌다. 이 컨퍼런스의 리포트는 미국 메드트로닉스사에 계신 박은성 박사님께서 수고해 주셨습니다. 궁금하신 점은 박은성 박사님께 문의하시기 바랍니다. e-mail : eunsungp2@hotmail.com 첨부. Food Biotechnology in the united States:Science, Regulation, and Issues 스크랩

The use of biotechnology to produe genetically engineered foods can potentially provide greater yiedls of nutritionally enhanced foods from less land with reduced use of pesticides and herbicides. This technology has both critics and supporters. Concerns presented to Congress include potential detrimental effects to human and animal health and the environment, and violation of religious customs.

Electronic Signatures:Technology Developments and Legislative Issues 스크랩

Electronic signatures, a means of verifying the identity of the user of a computer system to control access or authorize a transaction, are increasingly being used in electronic commerce. Several technologies can be used to produce electronic signatures, the most prominent being digital signatures, which use cryptographic techniques to provide data integrity and nonrepudiation. Legislation enacted in the 106th Congress enables the legal recognition of electronic signatures in interstate commerce. Otherlegislation introduced but not enacted was intended to promote federal agency use of electonic signatures to enable electronic filing of information.

Alternative Transportation Fuels and Vehicles:Energy, Environment, and Development Issues 스크랩

Three key laws, the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 (P.L. 100-494), the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (P.L. 101-549), and the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (P.L. 102-486), as well as three Executive Orders, support the development and commercialization of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles. These legislative acts and administrative actions provide tax incentives to purchase AFVs, promote the expansion of alternative fueling infrastructure, and require the use of AFVs by various public and private entities. Several bills in the 106 th Congress proposed to expand these programs or create further incentives for alternative fuel and vehicle use. Opponents argue that there are other, more cost-effective ways of promoting clean air and energy conservation. This report reviews these issues.

소개 : 8th Joint MMM-Intermag Conference는 2001년 1월 7일부터 1월 11일까지 미국 샌안토니오의 Marriot (Rivercenter) 호텔에서 개최되었다. 이 학회는 미국 물리학회(AIP)에서 주관하는 MMM (Magnetism & Magnetic Materials) Conference와 미국 전기학회(IEEE)에서 주관하는 Intermag (International magnetic conference)이 3~4년에 한번씩 갖는 Joint Conference로 magnetics에 관한 세계 최대의 학회이다. 정확한 참석 인원은 파악하지 못했지만, 54편의 초청강연(Invited talk)과 약 1300편의 구두 및 포스터 논문들이 112개의 session으로 구분되어 발표되었다. 전체 발표의 70% 이상을 magnetic recording (HDD) 및 magnetic sensor/RAM 분야가 차지하였고, 그 외에 magnet, new materials, magnetic modeling/calculation, magnetic theory에 관련된 발표가 주를 이루었다. 따라서 본문에서는 주로 magnetic recording 분야와 MR 소자 분야에 대한 발표를 중심으로 기술하였다.1월 10일에 있었던 IEEE 총회에서는 Komag inc.의 회장인 Tu Chen이 올해의 IEEE awards를 수상했으며, 총회 발표로는 수직자기기록(perpendicular magnetic recording)의 창시자인 Shun-ichi IWASAKI 교수의 “The history of perpendicular magnetic recording”에 대한 발표가 있었다. 또한 1월 7일 저녁에는 magnetic MEMS에 관한 tutorial session이 있었다. 이 컨퍼런스의 리포트는 삼성종합기술원에 계신 이경진박사님께서 수고해 주셨습니다. 궁금하신 점은 이경진박사님께 문의하시기 바랍니니다. e-mail: leekj@sait.samsung.co.kr 첨부 .Joint MMM 이경진.doc

Government Paperwork Elimination Act presents Challenges for Agencies 스크랩

To increase the ability of citizens to interact with the federal government electronically, in 1998 the Congress enacted the Government Paperwork Elimination Act(P.L.No.105-277, Div.C, tit.XVII). The act requires that by 2003 federal agencies provide the public, when practicable, the option of submitting, maintaining, and disclosing required information-such as empolyment records, tax forms, and loan applications-electronically, instead of on paper.
