Because the telephone networks and cable systems that provide consumers with physical transport to the Internet were originally designed to provide different services-voice or video communications-they differ technologically in several respects. Although U.S. households most often use conventional telephone lines for Internet transport, these lines offer relatively slow data transmission speeds. While the use of a new technology over telephone networks can provide transport to the Internet at higher speeds, at this time this technology generally can only serve consumers living within a few miles of their telephone company's facilities.

소개 : Journal of Research of the National Institutes of Standards and Technology에 2000년 5/6월호에 실린 보고서 입니다. 본 보고서는 화합물 반도체의 재료 공정 및 소자 레벨의 연구를 특정한 응용성에 마추어 만들어낸 로드맵을 소개하고 있습니다. 예를들면 미래의 초고속 광통신 및 digital video 응용에 관한 로드맵이 언급되어 있습니다. 분석자 서론 : 화합물반도체는 Si 과 다른 독특한 물리적 특성을 가지고 있어서 몇몇 응용분야에서 우수함이 증명되었음에도 불구하고 국제시장에서 Si에 비해 투자에 있어 우선권을 점하고 있지 못하다. 이 논문의 주목적은 반도체 산업 투자의 결정권자에게 화합물반도체의 우수성 및 필요성을 일깨워주는데 있다. 또한 이 논문의 목적은, 1) International Technology Roadmap for Compound Semiconductors (ITRCS)을 이해하는 지침과 일반적 원칙을 제시한다. 2) 무선 통신이나 고속 디지털 통신망과 같은 화합물반도체를 이용한 특별한 시스템 구현에 있어서 화합물반도체의 기술적 난점을 규명한다. Technology Roadmap (TR)은 투자에 있어서 불확실성을 줄일 수 있는 효과적인 방법이다. 돌이켜 볼 때, 기술은 최초 TR이 예측과는 다른 방향으로 발전되기도 하였다. 하지만 TR의 진정한 가치는 중요한 핵심 기술을 예측하여 기업들의 공동 협력 및 투자를 이끌어 내는데 있다.
