This report by the Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources for the 1998-99 financial year has been prepared in accordance with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's Requirements for Departmental Annual Reports. It is an account by the Secretary to the Minister for Industry, Science and Resources of the Department's performance during the year. The report also provides the necessary information to enable the Parliament and the public to make informed assessments of the Department's operations.

Australian Science and Technology at a Glance is a pocket-sized reference on Australia's scientific and technological funding, infrastructure and performance. It provides quantitative data, particularly on research and development. Data are mostly presented in charts to emphasise trends over time and other forms of comparison. Selected comparitive data on OECD and Asia-Pacific economies are included. The latest available data were used-mostly these were for the 1996-97 fiscal year. Most data were compiled from surveys performed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics(ABS) and international statistical agencies. The S&T Analysis Section of ISR uses these data to develop indicators and analyses to facilitate an informed debate on S&T and innovation policy issues. This booklet is an update of the 1997 edition and was produced principally by Luciano Lombardo and Anandhi Raj.

The Purpose of the CRC Compendium is to provide brief information on all 67 Cooperative Centres. Each entry provides essential information including the Centre's core participants, field of research and areas of expertise. The entry also includes descriptive information such as the location of the Centre, contact details, Chair of the Board, date of establishment and some statistical and financial information. This is the fourth edition of the CRC Compendium. It provides summary information on the 67 CRCs currently operating. The Third edition covered the 62 Centres selected in the first four selection rounds.

This report identifies challenges and opportunities in the nanotechnology field and outlines the necessary steps on how advances made in nano-science, engineering, and technology can help to boost our nation's economy, ensure better healthcare, and enhance national security in the coming decade.
