  • Study of Human Diseases at the Intersections of Physical Sciences, Engineering and Biology
    • - Dr. Subra Suresh, Director, National Science Foundation (2012/07/27)
    • - Category : Wednesday Afternoon Lectures
Suresh, on leave from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was dean of the School of Engineering, will deliver a science lecture, Study of Human Diseases at the Intersections of Physical Sciences, Engineering and Biology.

Suresh has long advocated for the integration of biology and engineering. At MIT he has been involved with the creation of multiple pioneering initiatives, such as placing engineering labs in the new MIT Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research; establishing the MIT Department of Biological Engineering; and forming an international alliance of engineers and biologists to study tuberculosis, avian flu, malaria and respiratory syncytial virus.

How are the onset and progression of human diseases influenced by systematic changes in physical properties at the molecular and cell level, and vice versa? What new insights into the mechanistic origins of an infectious disease can be gained by combining the latest advances from seemingly unconnected disciplines such as mechanical engineering and genetics? This presentation will describe recent research results that incorporate state-of-the-art experimental and computational methods from physical sciences, life sciences, genetics and different branches of engineering in the study of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, hereditary blood disorders and cancer. Applications of such results at the convergence of different disciplines will be discussed in the context of mechanistic understanding, novel diagnostics and therapeutics.

The NIH Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide.

This training is part of the implementation of the policies described in NIH Manual Chapter 7410, Review and Documentation of Protections for Human Subjects in Extramural Grant Applications and Research and Development Contract Proposals that was published in May, 2012. The material will be of relevance to all extramural program personnel who deal with grant applications and contract proposals involving research on human subjects. Because there are now new review and acquisition procedures in place for handling R&D contract proposals involving human subjects, the course will be especially useful to Contract Officers and Contract Officer Technical Representatives and Scientific Review Officers.

  • Molecular Insights on Aging from Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome
    • - Dr. Francis Collins (2012/07/15)
    • - Category : Special
The Geroscience Interest Group (GSIG) cordially invites you to the seminar listed above. Dr. Collins is the Director of the NIH, a post he has held since 2009. Previously he was the Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the NIH for 15 years. In that capacity his leadership was crucial to the landmark feat of sequencing the entire human genome in 2001. Before joining the NIH, as a Howard Hughes Investigator at the University of Michigan he made many seminal discoveries in the area of disease-associated genes, including discovery of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR), the first gene ever identified to be directly responsible for a disease phenotype, cystic fibrosis. In 2003 his team identified Lamin A as the gene whose mutation is responsible for the extreme accelerated aging phenotype observed in Hutchinson-Gilford progeria patients. His seminar will focus on recent developments in the field of Hutchinson-Gilford progeria.

The Geroscience Interest Group (GSIG) is a newly formed trans-NIH group aimed at enhancing opportunities for discussion of the intersection between the biology of aging and the biology of diseases and conditions that are of interest across ICs. It is focused on basic biology, but with a longer view towards translation.
