  • 과학기술과 인문사회

This paper reviews the basic principles of how spin can be employed in semiconductor electronics, and reports on a number of possible applications of semiconductor spin electronics where progress is currently being made. First they presented an overview of the spin phenomena that occur in III-V ferromagnetic semiconductors and their heterostructures, and in non-magnetic semiconductor quantum wells and nanostructures. Then they discussed optical spin devices such as optical isolators, and electron spin devices such as magnetoresistance elements. Finally they reviewed proposals for quantum spin devices that utilize the quantum mechanical nature of spins. This review is a good general report for the cutting edge technology of semiconductor spin electronics.

The Cornell Nanofabrication Facility (CNF) has served the US research community for more than 21 years by providing nanofabrication services to over 600 research projects on the beautiful Cornell University campus. Subjects for research are as diverse as Astronomy and Plant Pathology, and projects delve into the emerging fields of Integrated Optics and Microelectromechanical Structures (MEMS) as well as the more conventional Microelectronics, Physics and Materials Research. A Sampling of Research from NNUN (2002) -- The Table of Contents and Introduction 1-5 -- Biology & Chemistry 6-24 -- Electronics pg 25-39 -- Materials, Physics, Processes & Characterization pg 40-66 -- Mechanical & MEMS Devices pg 67-75 -- Optics & Opto-Electronics pg 76-91 -- Index pg 92-96

DNA-mediated artificial nanobiostructures: state of the art and future 스크랩

  • R. BASHIR
  • |

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)-mediated assembly of nanometer and micrometer scale structures can have a profound impact in the fields of nanoelectronics and nanotechnol-ogy. Such structures can also find applications in microelectromechanical systems, hybrid bio-sensors, and the potential to continue the scaling of Moore’s law beyond the 50 nm node. While engineers and scientists have been long aspiring to controllably and specif-ically manipulate structures at the micrometer and nanometer scale, nature has been per-forming these tasks and assembling structures with great accuracy and high efficiency us-ing highly specific biological molecules such as DNA and proteins. This paper describes the motivations and fundamentals behind these assembly concepts, with a focus on DNA hybridization-mediated assembly, and presents the state of the art in this field. In addition, new ideas and directions for future research on DNA-mediated assembly of active devices and DNA-based molecular devices are also presented. 1. Motivation for bio-inspired self-assembly 2. DNA fundamentals 3. Attachment of DNA to gold surfaces 4. DNA-inspired self-assembly and construction of nanostructures 5. Future directions 6. ※ Production of New Biomass/Waste-Containing Solid Fuels FINAL REPORT (The Quarterly Technical Report for May 1 - July 12, 2000 in incorporated within) ABSTRCT CQ Inc. and its team members addressed the objectives of the Department of Energy and industry to produce economical, new solid fuels from coal, biomass, and waste materials that reduce emissions from coal-fired boilers. This project builds on the team's commercial expierience in composite fuels for energy production. The electric utility industry is interested in the use of biomass and wastes as fuel to reduce both emissions and fuel costs. In addition to these benefits, utilities also recognize the business advantage of consuming the waste byproducts of customers both to retain customers and to improve the public image of the industry. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Executive Summary 2. Introduction 3. Results and Discussion 1) Project Management 2) Feedback Characterization 3) Optimize Dewatering Die Geometry 4) Prototype Die Evaluation 5) Market Assessment of Biomass/Waste-Containing Fuel 6) Process Design and Economic Analysis 4. Electronic Commerce: Small Business Participation in Selected On-line Procurement Programs 스크랩

  • 과학기술과 인문사회

◆ The federal government has been pursuing electronic initiatives to strengthen its buying processes, reduce costs, and create a competitive "virtual" marketplace. Small businesses, however, may have difficulty participating in federal on-line procurement programs. Furthermore, the government's business outreach and education programs related to electronic commerce may not be adequately coordinated. For the three federal on-line procurement programs GAO reviewed, the dollar share of awards to small businesses exceeded the overall small business share of total federal contract dollars awarded in fiscal years 2000 and 1999. Although small businesses successfully participated in these three programs, they still face obstacles in conducting electronic procurements with the government. The federal government is taking steps to address some of these obstacles, such as implementing a single point of entry on the Internet for vendors to access information on available government business opportunities greater than $25,000. Each of the four business assistance programs GAO examined had taken steps to educate its clients on electronic commerce as part of its operations. However, GAO could not fully determine the extent of these activities because they are conducted by hundreds of local and regional offices, and only one of the programs collected performance metrics specific to electronic commerce. 원문바로보기

U.S. Postal Service: Update on E-Commerce Activities and Privacy Protections 스크랩

  • 과학기술과 인문사회

◆ Management of the U.S. Postal Service's (USPS) e-commerce program has been fragmented, and implementation of e-commerce initiatives has varied at different business units. Overall, USPS' performance in this area has fallen short of expectations. Last year, the Postmaster General announced a sweeping management restructuring that changed both the reporting structure and program managers. USPS also revised its procedures for approving and implementing new Internet initiatives, including e-commerce. However, concerns persist about whether USPS' e-commerce initiatives are being cross-subsidized by other postal products and services. USPS managers contend that e-commerce products and services must cover their incremental costs. GAO found that this goal has not been met and it is unclear when it might be achieved. Without accurate, complete, and consistent financial information, USPS cannot assess its progress toward its financial performance goals for e-commerce. USPS also lacks clear and comprehensive policies and procedures for reporting direct and indirect revenues and costs for e-commerce and other new products and services. As a result, reporting inconsistencies are likely to continue. In contrast, USPS has reportedly developed privacy policies and practices for its e-commerce customers that exceed those required by federal law. 원문바로보기
