This is the fifth edition of the Register of Learned and professional societies. The initial list of learned societies and professional bodies used to form this register was that developed by the Royal society and the British Academy prior to the Foundation for science and technology undertaking the role of learned societies liaison. The list has since been enlarged and broadened, societies liaison. The list has since been enlarged and broadened, comprising both those bodies carrying out original research and those seeking to improve knowledge and education in their particular subjects. The register is used by many individuals, especially those in industry, by educational institutions and by libraries as well as many national and international organisations. The details for this register have been supplied by the learned societies concerned, and it has been produced from the completed forms. Appreciation is recorded for the assistance of Mrs. Jennifer Grassley and Mrs. Christine Broomhead in the preparation of this publication.

Findings and recommendations References Glossary Appendix A : Committee Biographies Appendix B : Workshop Agenda and Speaker Biographies 분석자 서문 : 대학시절 병리학 시간에 기형종(teratoma)이라는 암 덩어리 내부에 머리카락, 연골, 치아, 뼈, 피부, 근육, 폐조직, 신경조직 등의 다양한 정상조직이 들어 있는 사진을 본 적이 있었다. 기형종(teratoma)은 후복막에서 생기는 세 개의 배엽 기원 조직을 모두 포함하는 선천성 양성 종양인데, 한 종양의 모든 세포는 한 개의 세포에서 기원한다는 사실에서, 기형종 내부의 그 모든 다양한 조직들이 단일세포에서 기원했음을 알 수 있었다. 하나의 체세포가 그처럼 다양한 조직을 만들 수 있다는 사실이 신기하게 느껴졌다. 그 사진을 보면서 다소 엉뚱한 생각도 했는데, 그것은 만약 그 환자가 관절염도 앓고 있을 경우, 기형종 내부에 있는 연골 관절에 이식하면 거부반응 없는 좋은 치료법이 되지 않을까 하는 것이었다. 종양은 환자 자신의 세포에서 기원하기 때문에, 기형종 내부의 연골은 그 환자 자신의 연골과 동일하다는 점에 착안한 것이었다. 자동차 엔진 문제로 여러 정비소를 돌아 다녔지만 엔진 자체의 문제라는 말만 할 뿐 누구도 시원하게 해결해주지 못할 때는 답답함을 느낄 것이다. 이 때는 누구든지 엔진을 새 것으로 바꾸고 싶다는 생각을 한번쯤은 하게 될 것이다. 현대의학으로 완치가 불가능한, 특정 조직 또는 장기에 국한된 질환을 앓고 있는 사람들도 마찬가지의 생각을 할 것이다. 새 것으로 바꿀 수 없을까? 간경화, 알츠하이머병(치매), 파킨슨씨병, 당뇨병, 심장질환, 척수손상, 악성 혈액질환 등 완치 불가능한 질환을 앓고 있는 많은 사람들에게 인체의 어떤 장기도 생성 가능한 줄기세포는 새로운 희망으로 떠오르고 있다. 이들의 절실함은 재작년 미국 대선을 앞두고 파킨슨씨병 환자인 배우 마이클 제이 폭스(http://www.michaeljfox.org)가 줄기세포 연구를 장려할 후보를 미국대통령으로 뽑아야 한다고 주장한 뉴욕 타임스 컬럼에 잘 나타나 있다. 아래의 보고서(2001년 7월)는 대장암 연구의 석학 존스 홉킨스 대학의 보겔스타인 박사를 중심으로 한 위원회가 과학 및 법조와 종교계의 의견을 취합하여 재생의학의 돌파구로 부상하고 있는 줄기세포 연구에 관한 당위성 및 그 방향을 제시하고 있다. 이 자료의 분석은 State University of New York에 계신 최석용님께서 수고해 주셨습니다. 궁금하신 점은 최용석님께 문의하시기 바랍니다. e-mail : choi@pharm.sunysb.edu 첨부. NUCLEAR REGULATION : Progress Made in Emergency Preparedness at Indian Point 2, but Additional Improvements Needed 스크랩

Over the years, NRC had identified a number of emergency preparedness weaknesses at Indian Point 2 that had gone largely uncorrected. For example, in 1998 and again in 1999, NRC identified several communication weaknesses, including delays in activating the pagers used to alert the utility's staff about an emergency. Consolidated Edison had some actions under way to correct emergency preparedness weaknesses before the February 2000 event and initiated others to address the problems that occurred during it. However, according to an April 2001 NRC inspection report, the actions had not been fully effective. With respect to the aforementioned communications weaknesses in particular, in evaluating Consolidated Edison's response to the February 2000 emergency, NRC found that critical personnel were not notfied in a timely fashion, which delayed the critical personnel were not notified in a timely fashion, which delayed the staffing and operation of the on-site emergency response facility. NRC found that this occurred because the process to activate the pagers was complex and not well understood and that Consolidated Edison had acted without diagnosing the underlying causes of the problems. As a result, NRC found emergency preparedness problems similar to those it had identified before and during the February 2000 event. Despite the weaknesses identifited, in commenting on a fraft of this report, NRC noted that Consolidated Edison's emergency preparedness program could protect the public. The four counties in New York State that are responsible for responding to a radiological emergency at Indian Point 2 have strengthened their emergency preparedness programs as a result of the lessons learned from the February 2000 event. These lessons included the need for better coordination between the counties in responding to a radiological emergency and in providing the media with information. An other important lesson learned was the need to improve communication during an emergency between Consolidated Edison and the counties about the extent of the problems and their potential impact on the public. This lesson resulted in one important change to improve communications among the state, counties, and Consolidated Edison. In partnership. they revised the form that Consolidated Edison used to provide information on whether radiation was released from the plant. Although the February 2000 event posed no danger to the public, Consolidated Edison had not clearly communicated with the state and counties about whether a radioactive release had occurred and its magnitude. Consolidated Edison reported that a radioactive release had occurred. This contradictory information led to credibility problems with the media and the public. The form now clearly shows whether a release has occurred.

This Report examines the Hynix controversy. After an introduction laying out the essence of the controversy, the report provides some context by analyzing the nature of the semiconductor industry, and the slump that is transforming the DRAM industry. The report then examines in detail the debate over Hynix's rescue packages, focusing in particular on the question of the Korean government's role. Part three describes the requirements and procedures for United States and WTO anti-dumping and countervailing duty cases. The report concludes with an assessment of the status of the DRAM industry and of the impact of the issue on U.S.-Korea relations. The report will be updated if the U.S. pursues a trade case against Hynix.

There are numerous potential legislative initiatives available to Congress to affect the Agreed Framework. A certain role for Congress will involve Administration requests for appropriations to help finance the costs of the various benefits to North Korea. Moreover, Congress under law will have to review a prospective U.S.-North Korea nuclear agreement, which the Administration will have to negotiate before light water reactors with U.S. technology can be sent to North Korea.

V-22 Osprey Tilt-Rotor Aircraft 스크랩

Congress has supported the V-22 as a new technology with multi-service military applications as well as civilian uses, since derivatives of this tilt-rotor aircraft could be used in civil aviation with commercial and foreign sales implications. Proponents argue that it can replace aging helicopters in all four services with a multi-purpose aircraft that has more capability. Critics question its military value and affordability at a time of reduced defense spending and argue that its performance would not be worth the cost of developing and producing this tilt- rotor aircraft.

Joint Strike Fighter(JSF) Program : Background, Status, and Issues 스크랩

The Defense Department's Joint Strike Fighter(JSF) is one of three aircraft programs at the center of current debate over tactical aviation, the others being the Air Force F-22 fighter and the Navy F/A-18E fighter/attack plane. In November 1996, the Defense Department selected two major aerospace companies, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, to demonstrate competing designs for the JSF, a joint-service and multi-role fighter/attack plane. On October 26, 2001, the Lockheed Martin team was selected to develop further and to produce a family of conventional take-off and landing(CTOL), carrier-capable(CV), and short take-off vertical landing(STOVL) aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps and the U.K. Royal Navy as well as other allied services. Originally designated the Joint Advanced Strike Technology(JAST) program, the JSF program is a major issue in Congress because of concerns about its cost and budgetary impact, effects on the defense industrial base, and implications for U.S. national security in the early 21st century.
