UNESCO's Workshop on Ethical Issues Related to Biotechnology and Biosafety 스크랩

Ethical issues in biotechnology and biosafety to be debted in China UNESCO-Newsletter for the Follow-up of the World Conference on Science The workshop is being organized later this month by the institute of genetics of the chinese academy of sciences, in close co-operation with the UNESCO Beijing Office, the Qingdao-based Biotechnology Education and Training Centre(Betcen) and Microbiological Resources Centre (Mircen) in Beijing. A number of non-governmental organizations will be represented among the international participants and one member of UNESCO's international bioethics committee is travelling to the event. The workshop follows up the recommendation from the world conference on science that 'research institutions foster the study of ethical aspects of scientific work' Taking the universal declaration on human genome an human rights as a starting point, the workshop will focus on: free access to the human genome sequences; benefit-sharing of genetic resources in developing countries; ethics, intellectual property and genomics; application of genetic information and genetic measures; biotechnology, biodiversity and biosafety; embryonic stem cells and reproductive cloning; education and dissemination of bio-ethical principles. Besides providing an opportunity for participants to exchange views and experiences, the workshop should give public awareness of these important topics 'a great boost', particularly in China.

The Japan society for the promotion of science, or gakushin for short, is a quasi-governmental organization, established by a national law for the purpose of contribting to the advancement of science, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT). JSPS plays a key role in the administration of various scientific and academic programs. While working within the broad framework of government policies established to promote scientific advancement, JSPS carries out its programs in a manner flexible to the needs of the participating scientists. JSPS's operation is supported in large part by annual subsideies from the Japanese Government. This report is an annual report about policy measures implemented for promotion of science and technology under the obligation of the science and technology basic law(Legislation No. 130, 1995) Article 8. In part 1 and Part 2 of this report, trends of broad and wide-ranging activities about science and technology are described for the help to understand part 3, the policy mesures implemented for the promotion of science and technology. Inpart 1, under the title "Towards the 21st Century," in addition to looking back at the development of mankind in the 20th century and of science and technology, a description for the new relationship between society and science and technology in the new century is presented. In part 2 various data are used to compare scientific and technological activities in Japan with those in other principal nations.

학회 개요 : ODS(Optical Data Storage)는 매년 봄에 열리는 광 정보 저장 기술과 관련한 학회로 매년 가을에 열리는 ISOM(International Symposium of Optical Memory)과 함께 이 분야에서 가장 중요한 학회이다. 회의 장소는 주로 미국이며 실제 응용 기술 중심인 ISOM과는 약간 다르게 차세대 원천 기술 및 이의 응용과 관련한 발표가 주를 이룬다. 올해에는 미국 뉴멕시코(New Mexico)주 산타페(Santa Fe)의 라폰다(La Fonda) 호텔에서 개최되었으며 주요 참가국은 미국, 일본, 한국, 대만 등이고 이외에 싱가포르와 영국 등 기타 국가에서 약 300여명의 인원이 참여하였다. 한국과 일본에서는 주로 광 저장 기기 및 매체와 관련한 대기업이 참여하였으며 미국 등에서는 대학에서 주로 참여하지만 최근 들어 첨단 기술을 가진 미국 Venture 기업들의 참여가 눈에 띄게 늘고 있다. 이 학회의 보고서는 LG전자의 신윤섭 박사님께서 수고해 주셨습니다. 궁금하신 점은 박사님께 문의하시기 바랍니다. e-mail : ysshin97@lge.com 첨부. SPring-8 User Experiment Report No. 6(2000B) 스크랩

This report presents results of non-proprietary experiments conducted using SPring-8 public and contract beamlines during the period september 2000 through january 2001. SPring-8 opened for research in october 1997 and holds two calls per year for research proposals to use its beamlines. The results of the 461 proposals reported here cover its sixth research period(2000B). They include 254 normal proposals, one urgent proposal, 12 reserve-shift proposals for a research field of life science, and 4 long term proposals. The long-term use of which length is less than three years began in this research period. These proposals carried out using 17 public beamlines and 7 other beamlines. Furthermore, 85 proposals carried out using 5 contract beamlines. SPring-8's public and contract beamlines are available for proprietary and non-proprietary research. In the case of proprietary research, there is a charge for beamtime but no obligation to place the results of experiments the public domain. However, users who conduct non-proprietary research and submit a completed experiment, do not have to pay for beamtime. In this research period, 8 and 2 propreitary researchs were carried out in the public beamline and contract ones, respectively. After each research period, SPring-8 publishes the non-proprietary research results submitted by users in their experimental report forms. In some cases, users continued with their analysis after the 60-day reporting deadline; consequently the material included here may not always reflect a full picture of experimental achievements. 미국 뇌종양 연구 정책에 대한 최신 고찰 스크랩

분석자 서문 : 미국에서는 미국 국립 암 연구소(National Cancer Institute; NCI)는 암의 원인, 생물학적 특성, 예방, 조기 진단과 치료에 대한 기초, 임상 실험을 지원하는 기관으로 그 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이 기관에서 축적된 연구 결과로 파생된 수 많은 지식과 신기술로 이전보다 더 많은 종류의 연구과제 증가와 연구 필요성의 증대를 가져왔다. 이렇게 많은 종류의 연구과제 중에서 전체 연구 방향 설정과 연구의 진척 정도를 판가름할 수 있는 지표가 될 연구과제 선택의 우선 순위 책정의 필요성이 대두 하였다. 이런 문제를 해결하기 위해서 NCI 보조기구로 PRGs(Progress Review Groups; 미국 연구 진척 검토위원회, -역자주-)가 발족되었다. 이 뇌종양 연구는 주로 NCI와 NINDS (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke; 미국 뇌질환-뇌졸증 연구소, -역자주-)의 지원으로 이루어지는데 최근에 들어와서 무수한 연구결과가 축적되면서 상기한 문제가 대두되었다. 이 뇌 연구자 집단에 방향 설정과 연구의 진척의 척도가 될 만한 연구과제 선택의 우선순위 책정을 위해 NCI와 미국 국립 보건원(National Institutes of Health; NIH)의 협동으로 뇌종양 연구에 국한된PRG가 창립되었는데, 그 명칭을 BT-PRG(Brain Tumor Progress Review Group; 미국 뇌종양 연구 진척 검토위원회, -역자주-)로 정하게 되었다. 이 보고서는 BT-PRG의 노력의 결과 산물로 뇌종양과 연관된 연구의 진척에 필요한 좋은 제언과 주요 정책 과제를 기록하였다. 이 자료의 분석은 연세대학교 원주의대에 계시는 양석우님께서 수고해 주셨습니다. 궁금하신 점은 양석우님께 문의하시기 바랍니다. e-mail : geo47@hanmail.net 첨부 .Brain Tumor Progress Review Group - Yang.pdf
