Sex Differences in Responses of Gastrointestinal Tract to Stress: Implication of CRF-Signaling Pathways Muriel Larauche, Ph.D. Postdoctoral Fellow Center for Neurobiology of Stress UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases

    Lin Chang, M.D.

Lin Chang is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases and Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is the Co-Director of the Center for Neurobiology of Stress at UCLA, and Associate Director of the UCLA General Clinical Research Center (GCRC). Dr. Chang???s main area of research is the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), with particular interest in the overlap of IBS with fibromyalgia, gender differences, and neuroendocrine alterations. She is principal investigator on two NIH grants studying the central and peripheral mechanisms underlying IBS.
In 2002, Dr. Chang received the Janssen Award in Gastroenterology for Basic or Clinical Research. She is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the Society for Neuroscience. She is currently serving as a Clinical Councilor of the AGA Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section. Dr. Chang has multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. She has given numerous lectures at national and local meetings.

    Jennifer Labus, Ph.D.

Dr. Labus is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she is head of the Connectivity and Computational Statistics Division at the Center for Neurobiology of Stress. Dr. Labus???s research focuses on mapping the neural networks underlying stress neurobiology with specific emphasis on models of visceral and functional pain and brain-body interactions. Specifically, she is examining altered central and autonomic nervous system processes in functional pain disorders, stress neurobiology, and the statistical methodology applied to interpret the complex data yielded by psychophysiological assessments such as fMRI, PET, acoustic startle response, and heart-rate variability. Dr. Labus recently received a K08 award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to delineate the neural networks involved in visceral pain and GI function using network analysis. Her research investigates sex-specific differences in the effective connectivity of emotional-arousal circuitry.

    Muriel Larauche, Ph.D.

Muriel Larauche is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Neurobiology of Stress. She is presently the recipient of a NIDDK Gastroenterology Training Grant. Her primary research focuses on the development of animal models of visceral pain with a specific interest in stress-induced visceral hyperalgesia and its modulation by sexual hormones. She is the author of several articles and abstracts presented at different national and international meetings. She was the recipient of the Nestle Guigoz Award in 2001 and has obtained seed fundings for her research from both the CNS pilot and feasibility program and the Iris Cantor-Women???s Health Center at UCLA from 2006 to 2007.

  • Epidemiology for Researchers Performing Genetic/Genomic Studies
    • - National Human Genome Research Institute (U.S.) (2010/11/18)
    • - Category : Conferences
This is a short course targeted at investigators and trainees doing research in human genetics, particularly studies employing genomic analyses of samples from human population. It aims to familiarize researchers studying the human genome with basic principles and potential pitfalls of epidemiology as applied to human genome research. It will draw from traditional genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics, but will emphasize the application of genomic technologies to unrelated subjects in human populations. Focus will be on the design, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of the epidemiologic studies most feasible and appropriate to address the genomic questions of interest.

    • - Towards an Artificial Pancreas Public Meeting (2010/11/18)
    • - Category : Conferences
The artificial pancreas is one of FDA???s Critical Path Initiatives, a program dedicated to accelerating the availability of much needed medical products. The Interagency Artificial Pancreas Working Group, a group of multi-disciplined scientists and clinicians from the FDA and NIH, was established to support this initiative. The goals of the Artificial Pancreas Initiative are two fold; to provide infrastructure for narrowing the gap between basic biomedical knowledge and clinical application of novel technologies, and to cross-fertilize and partner with stakeholders in order to identify and overcome the clinical and scientific challenges to the development of an artificial pancreas. Through collaborative efforts, such as this workshop, the group strives to develop innovative strategies to achieve their goals.

World-renowned experts will present information on key topics in the development of artificial pancreas during sessions that will be followed by roundtable discussions. Session topics will include:

??? State-of-the-art design of closed-loop glycemic control systems

??? Results of recently conducted clinical trials

??? Clinical Trial design, including how to define success and failures of a closed-loop system

??? Algorithms and in silico models

    ??? Engineering challenges

    ??? Patient considerations

    ??? Metabolic monitoring

??? Paths for developing a marketable closed-loop system

The agenda for this public workshop is available on the internet at http://www.blsmeetings.net/artificialpancreas08/agenda.pdf. For more information see the meeting webpage at http://www.blsmeetings.net/artificialpancreas08/intro.cfm.
