Women in Science, Engineering and technology - an on-line consultation 스크랩

Although there were undoubtedly significant increases in the number of women in science, engineering and technology during the latter half of the 20th century, they are still under-represented compared with their proportion in the general population. In some areas, such as biosciences, as many as 43% of UK university post-doctoral researchers were women in 1997/98. But in physics this figure was only 14%, and 12% in electrical, electronic and computer engineering. In addition, when senior scientific posts are considered, the situation was worse - only 1% of physics professors were women.

Over the past 3 years, IDA has introduced MEMS technology to DOD systems managers, has translated DOD operational needs and requirements to MEMS Principal Investigators, has brokered MEMS technology demonstrations, and has advised DARPA on strategies and tactics to promote use of MEMS technology in DOD systems. This presentation attempts to identify technology transition lessons that may translate into more efficient and effective technology transfer.

A Strategy of Security Services for Enterprise Applications 스크랩

As the globalization of business becomes common practice, the need for secure enterprise computing increases. Even though many security solutions are available for enterprise computing today, they are, in general, designed to be applications independent. Therefore, each enterprise application has to adapt these solutions and tailor them for its specific use. In this paper, we investigate the security requirements for enterprise computing. We then present a strategy for providing solutions that can meet those requirements. Many of the requirements and solutions in this paper address the scalability of existing security solutions, the separation of enterprise application security from concrete organization level security enforcement, and the enforcement of fine-grained access control.

Slow Positron Beam for Materials and Surface Characterization 스크랩

A variable, mono-energetic slow positron beam (0-30 keV) coupled with Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation and positron lifetime measurements has been constructed at the University of Missouri-kansas City. The beam is ideal for surface and materials characterization of defects of polymeric and coating materials in the range of sub-nanometer on the surface to a few μm in the bulk. This instrument becomes one of five slow positron beams currently available in the US for research on sub-nanometer defects and for training students and scientists in defense-related research. The performance of the beam, the counting rate and the resolution, is one of the best in the world.
